Mitchell Building Tours – 9:30 AM to 3:30 PM

Where: Mitchell Building

A self-guided tour of the University's oldest building. Situated next to the Art Gallery of South Australia, the Mitchell Building was first occupied in 1882 and housed the entire University in its infancy. Today it accommodates the University's senior administration, including the Office of the Vice-Chancellor and President. A war memorial for students, staff and graduates who served in World War 1 is located in this beautiful heritage building along with portraits of former Vice-Chancellors. Information leaflets on the Mitchell Building will be available and University of Adelaide Alumni Guides will be on hand to answer questions about the Mitchell and other heritage buildings on the North Terrace Campus.

The Judges Series by Arthur Boyd – 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM

Where: Exhibition Space, Mitchell Building

Arthur Boyd chose the theme for his series of twelve paintings, The Judges, in the hope that judges would never forget about human frailties and the susceptibility to temptation. The series was purchased jointly by the University and the University Union through the Works of Art Fund.

Tate Museum – 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM

Where: Ground Floor, Mawson Laboratories

Established in 1925 and named after Ralph Tate, Elder Professor of Natural Sciences at the University from 1876-1901, the Tate Museum collection includes minerals, rocks, fossils and specimens that illustrate geological phenomena. Also amongst the items you can see when visiting are items collected during Sir Douglas Mawson's expeditions.

  • Bizarre X-Rays We will have a range of real life x-rays of animals. Try your hand and guess which creatures and mishap are presented.
  • Bouncing Bovine Babies Come along and have a go at estimating the age of a cow foetus in our very own Betsy cow. Betsy is a dummy for training vet students in pregnancy diagnosis and staging.
  • Skeletons See our selection of animal-skeletons and try to guess what animal they came from and why they look the way they do.

  • Slime - Create and Play with Your Own Slime Ball Slime is fun to play with, have you ever wondered what it is made of and how it is made? Come along and make your own slime and find out.
  • Unbreakable Eggs What have a sheet and a car airbag got in common? And why would one of our physicists be throwing eggs at a sheet on Open Day? Curious, well come along for a not-to-be missed experiment!
  • Amorphous Metals - Improve Your Golf Game with the Atomic Trampoline See how the structure of a metal at the atomic level can alter rebound energy transfer! Watch a demonstration on what you could use to improve your golf game.
  • Virtual Reality Experience the South Australian Virtual Reality Centre and discover the origin of mass in our universe. Book in at the Sciences Hub.
  • Liquid Nitrogen - Deep Freeze Various Objects The temperature of liquid nitrogen is about 200 degrees celsius below zero. The unbearably cold temperature has striking effects on various objects. We'll demonstrate the effects of a deep freeze on a banana, rubber hose, and flower. Come and watch items being smashed to tiny fragments!
  • Computer Simulations - `Bend it Like Beckham' In this sport ball aerodynamics computer simulation see how slight changes in wind and ball speed affect whether a soccer goal is scored.
  • Lasers and Holograms See and learn how holograms are made using lasers with this holography display. Students make similar holograms in our laboratories as part of a degree in Physics.
  • Fibre Optics See our displays of new types of micro-structured optical fibres under a microscope then go along to one of our Photonics laboratory tours to see how they are made. Find out why something so small is made using such huge laboratory equipment. Plus other displays in the areas of Chemistry, Astronomy, Atmospheric Physics, Medical Physics and Environmental Luminescence.

  • Making Waves Come and look at our research boat and speak to our marine biologists about the exciting work that they do and the great equipment that they use.
  • How to be a Rock Legend! The University of Adelaide's geologists (our very own `rock legends') will show you some of the Earth's rocks, minerals and fossils, and how these can be used to find gold and other ore deposits. See how you can travel the world as a Rock Legend and work towards supporting Australia's economy in an environmentally sustainable way.
  • Google Earth Experience and explore our physical landscape in 3D and understand how our scientists use this technology to assist with their research.

  • DNA Extraction See what DNA looks like. Find out about the tools plant molecular biologists use to develop improved crop varieties and learn about gene technology. Discover this and more at the Gene Juice Bar.
  • Interactive Displays: From Paddock to Plate Find out how our research makes sure you have food on your plate that tastes great and is good for you. See how we've changed its voyage from the paddock to your plate. See how barley breeding has improved malt (and beer). Look under the microscope to see how we might stop fungi from making fruit rot. Learn how we're making wheat plants drought tolerant. Taste how different types of cereals can make different types of breads.

Visit the Sciences Hub to see how you can have a chance to win an iPod Shuffl e whilst learning interesting facts about science, and book into activities, building and research laboratory tours. Then visit interactive displays and follow a trail around the campus to explore the various sciences on offer at the University of Adelaide. The trail, tours and activities demonstrate how different disciplines and schools interact to provide excellent research and teaching outcomes.
Sciences Hub
The one stop shop for finding out about our displays on open day and booking into tours and activities. Here you can find out how you can be part of the science trail and get free giveaways as you visit our areas. Make sure you book in early at the Sciences Hub for building and lab tours and activities as numbers are limited. Likewise closed shoes are necessary for those wanting the hands on lab experience!

Meet the Scientist
The University of Adelaide is home to many of the world's leading scientists who are conducting cutting-edge research across a wide range of areas. Many of these individuals are also recognised as outstanding contributors to South Australian scientific knowledge through the Tall Poppy scheme.

At Open Day this year everyone will have the opportunity to meet with these experts and to learn about how this new knowledge is gained at our `Meet the Scientist' stand. Come armed with your questions and queries, and take a seat as you expand your understanding of the brilliant and exciting research being conducted daily within the Faculty of Sciences!

Half Light by Simone Kennedy  – 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM

Simone Kennedy's exhibition of paintings and mixed media installation evolved from a concept for a memorial evoking a reconstructed memory of the one occasion that she met her father. The Barr Smith Library – 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM

Where: Reading Room

The Barr Smith Library is South Australia's largest research library and features a range of art and cultural experiences. Visitors are encouraged to visit the Barr Smith Reading Room. The Reading Room is one of the University's hidden treasures. Enter from the grand steps on the eastern side of the building or follow the signs from the Library's main entrance to Level 2 North. Friends of the Library will be there to greet visitors, show them the Reading Room and answer questions.

Talk to our entrepreneurs and learn how you can commercialise your ideas, become innovative, develop projects and acquire the skills to pursue entrepreneurial activities. Leading experts will be available to discuss the diverse program options applicants can pursue. ECIC's core focus is on developing entrepreneurship, innovation, technology commercialisation, and/or project management capability in individuals and organisations. The ECIC undertakes research in these areas and disseminates its knowledge and expertise through the courses it teaches, the ThInc Lab (the University's Student Business Incubator operated by the ECIC that nurtures and assists ECIC students to develop and launch their own business ventures), and the ECIC's entrepreneur business planning competition, the eChallenge.

Centre for Automotive Safety Research (CASR)  – 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM

This centre is responsible for conducting research to understand how road crashes and the resulting injuries occur; proposing and evaluating ways to prevent crashes and injuries; and providing independent professional advice on road safety matters to government and non-government organisations in Australia and overseas. In recent years, CASR has undertaken research on the impact on road trauma of travel speed and speed limits, road infrastructure design, driver age, experience and medical condition and vehicle design.

The Australian Institute of Architects 2008 Colorbond Steel Student Travelling Exhibition – 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM

The School of Architecture, Landscape Architecture and Urban Design is lucky enough to have this exhibition visit their School this year. The exhibition features outstanding architectural design projects of 10 student finalists selected from 159 entries in the 2008 Student Biennale. This is a competition/ exhibition of student work from Design and Architecture schools from around Australia.

Children of all ages are invited to come along and participate in craft workshops that are linked to design in Architecture and Landscape Architecture. We have asked `That's Not Garbage' to collaborate with the School on some activities to keep the young ones entertained. Children will be able to take their designs home with them! www.thatsnotgarbage.com.au are a small South Australian based company, that recover resources used for art and craft activities in schools, kindergartens and child care centres.

Garden Design and Build Competition – 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM

Where: Hughes Plaza

Come and view students of the School of Architecture, Landscape Architecture and Urban Design, as they assemble their winning garden and build designs on the Hughes Plaza. Final year students of the Bachelor of Design Studies and Masters of Architecture and Landscape Architecture degrees will be participating in this competition from July 2009. The top three designs chosen will be given the opportunity to build their designs on Open Day. Students will be given limited space to build their garden design, and use water tolerant plants, building materials and gardening tools. All other competition entries will be on public display in the foyer of the School of Architecture, Landscape Architecture and Urban Design, Level 4, Architecture Building. We will be conducting a public vote for the best design, so please come along and place a vote for your favourite design. The prize will be awarded at 3pm.

Mathematics graduates work on aeroplane design, medical research, cryptography, traffic control, modelling of ocean currents, and more. Check out the Mathematics poster display to find out how the Queen of Hearts plays noughts and crosses and learn why mixing is important in pollutant dispersal, weather and climate prediction, microchip forensic analysis and more using an interactive fluid mixer. Learn about the new degree in Computational Engineering; it enables the development of complex engineering systems that are compatible with current trends of reduced emissions, fuel efficiency and the use of environmentally sustainable materials.

Electrical Machines and Drives Laboratory Tour – 10:10 AM to 3:40 PM

Wind turbines, satellites, hybrid solar cars and sophisticated surveillance systems are all examples of the projects final year students in Electrical and Electronic engineering undertake. On display will be a selection of past and current final year student projects including: an intriguing Mobile-Phone-Based Payphone; a Solar-Electric- Pedal Powered Trike; and an innovative Hybrid Solar-Electric Car. You will also have an opportunity to test how much pedal power it takes to run a light bulb and judge for yourself whether pedal-powered computers will ever be a hit! See Darcy's Flow Law in action by adding water flow to a series of unconsolidated sediments and view a range of oil samples from an international set of reservoirs. A unique chance to view architecture, aerospace and petroleum engineering, life sciences, geosciences and flight simulation in 3D through state-of-the-art technology. Acoustic Chambers Tour – 10:20 AM to 2:50 PM

Where: Engineering Marquee. Bookings must be made on the day, at the Tour Desk next to the Marquee.

Come to the Engineering Marquee to view the Prosthetic Knee Joint, just one example of the type of project to be undertaken by final year students in Australia's first Sports Engineering program. Such technology will allow disabled people or those afflicted by amputation to lead independent lives. Other examples of final year student projects on display include the Biodiesel Motorbike, Formula SAE Racing Car, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, iSOAR UAV, Fuel Cell UAV, Pulse-Jet UAV, Bio Trike, EDGAR, Wind Turbines and an Inverted Pendulum, each of which demonstrate the unique possibilities for future students. In addition, view the prototype of the Sydney Olympic Torch and the Athens Olympic Torch, showcasing the combustion technology used to produce the Olympic flame and developed by University of Adelaide mechanical and chemical engineers with industry partner FCT. These agreements allow students to study part of their degree at one of our partner universities for one or two semesters. International students are also encouraged to apply for a `3rd country' experience. This session will detail the processes involved for students wanting to study overseas through one of the University's exchange agreements. `Virtual Drawing' - Introduction to 3D Modelling Workshops – 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM

Potential students and members of the public will be able to sit in our state-of-the-art Computer Suite and learn how to use a program called `SketchUp'. This computer 3D modelling program is taught at a first year level in the Bachelor of Design Studies degree. This will allow them to learn how to draw a design three dimensionally in a 1 hour session and experience what it would be like to be a first year student in our School. This will be a highly motivated event and therefore the School is planning to `Live Stream' this event throughout the School. Chemical Engineering for the 21st Century – 1:30 PM to 2:00 PM

The playing field for chemical engineers is shifting rapidly and strategies need to be in place to prepare our new graduates for these challenges. At the forefront of academic research a paradigm shift has occurred from traditional analyses at continuum platforms to the molecular level. No longer is industry dominated by petroleum and chemical processes but is now augmented by biotechnology. Since 2007, the School has offered a new degree, the Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Engineering. The seminar will present the Chemical and Pharmaceutical Engineering Bachelor degrees, career choices and the future for our industry.

Law Mock Trial – 1:45 PM to 2:45 PM

Where: Moot Court, Level 1, Ligertwood Building

The Law Students Society (LSS) has charged one of its members with a criminal summons: come along to see if another law-student barrister can keep a friend out of the slammer. Run by the LSS, the Mock Trial is a competition about who can best examine witnesses and persuade the judge of the guilt or innocence of the defendant. A crown and defence barrister will each make short openings and closings, and present evidence to support their case.

Tate Museum Tours – 2:00 PM to 2:30 PM

The Tate Museum was established in 1925 and named after Ralph Tate, Elder Professor of Natural Sciences at the University from 1875-1901. The Tate Museum collection includes minerals, rocks, fossils and specimens that illustrate geological phenomena, including specimens collected by Sir Douglas Mawson.

This presentation will be relevant to students entering university for the first time and for students who already hold a tertiary qualification. Overseas Study as part of Your Degree – 2:30 PM to 3:30 PM

The University of Adelaide has over 80 exchange agreements with partner universities around the world. These agreements allow students to study part of their degree at one of our partner universities for one or two semesters. International students are also encouraged to apply for a `3rd country' experience. This session will detail the processes involved for students wanting to study overseas through one of the University's exchange agreements. There will also be involvement from students who have recently returned from their overseas study and there should be time for questions.

The University of Adelaide offers the widest range of degree and subject offerings in the field of Economics within South Australia. The single and double degrees promote the development of employment skills including critical and logical thinking, evaluation of argument and evidence and the ability to research global issues. A discussion that will emphasise the diversity of mechanical engineering with a focus on the opportunities that await successful graduates from some of South Australia's most sought after and unique engineering programs. Graduates from this discipline design and create projects, products and processes so that they function effectively and economically - this includes everything from microscopic components to massive manufacturing plants. Graduates have gained employment in a variety of industries from robotics, laser technology and biomedical research through to aerospace, as exemplified by famous graduate Dr Andy Thomas, Australia's first astronaut.
